Mid-Level Rails Developer
Role Overview
We're looking for a mid-level Ruby on Rails developer with 2-5 years of experience who is eager to grow while shipping real features. You should be comfortable working in a modern Rails 8 codebase and embrace the DHH Rails Way philosophy - convention over configuration, pragmatic simplicity, and building beautiful, maintainable applications.
This is a hands-on development role with mentorship and code review. You'll implement features end-to-end, collaborate closely with the team, and steadily take on more ownership using Hotwire (Turbo & Stimulus) and Kamal deployment.
Work Hours & Location
Fully remote, based in India (Chennai preferred). To overlap with our US-based team, this role requires working 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM IST (Indian Standard Time). You should be comfortable with this schedule on an ongoing basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Rails 8 application features following Rails conventions
- Implement responsive, fast user experiences with Turbo and Stimulus
- Write clean, tested, maintainable Ruby code and participate in code reviews
- Help deploy and maintain applications using Kamal and Docker
- Collaborate with the team, ask good questions, and grow your skills with mentorship
- Debug issues, fix bugs, and ship improvements with reasonable independence
Required Skills
- 2-5 years of professional Ruby on Rails experience
- Solid understanding of the DHH Rails Way philosophy - convention over configuration, DRY, and pragmatic simplicity
- Working knowledge of Rails 8 and its modern features (Solid Queue, Solid Cache, Solid Cable)
- Hands-on experience with Turbo (Turbo Drive, Turbo Frames, Turbo Streams)
- Familiarity with Stimulus JS for modest JavaScript interactions
- Comfortable writing tests and using Git in a collaborative workflow
- Able to work the 5:00 PM - 1:00 AM IST shift to overlap with the US team
Nice to Have
- Experience with Tailwind CSS
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL or SQLite
- Exposure to test-driven development (Minitest or RSpec)
- Experience with Kamal or Docker-based deployment
- Contributions to open source Rails projects
Our Development Philosophy
Convention Over Configuration
We follow Rails conventions. If Rails has a way to do something, that's how we do it.
Majestic Monolith
We believe in the power of a well-structured monolith over premature microservices.
HTML Over JSON
Server-rendered HTML enhanced with Turbo, not JSON APIs consumed by JavaScript frameworks.
Simplicity Wins
The best code is often the code you don't write. We keep things simple and pragmatic.
